What is Philly Gives Fund?

Philly Gives is a new philanthropic initiative launched by the Philadelphia Foundation, supported by a grant from the William Penn Foundation and in partnership with the Lenfest Institute for Journalism. Modeled on successful community-based media funds, Philly Gives aims to spotlight and support the nonprofit organizations that are essential to the well-being of Greater Philadelphia, while fostering a culture of giving that unites individuals, businesses, and foundations around common goals.

This year’s nonprofit grantees were carefully selected by a nomination committee comprised of respected community and civic leaders. Panelists reviewed nominations using a rigorous set of criteria to identify organizations that provide direct services to individuals in need, operate within Greater Philadelphia, and align with the fund’s mission and focus areas.

In addition, the Philadelphia Foundation’s grant staff assessed nominees to ensure alignment with the Philly Gives Fund’s core priorities, emphasizing leadership diversity and the unique impact each nonprofit brings to addressing pressing regional challenges.

Selection Criteria and Focus Areas:

  • Direct Service: Organizations must provide direct, impactful services to individuals and families in need.
  • Key areas of focus: Affordable Housing and Homelessness Prevention, Food Insecurity, Healthcare Access and Mental Health Services, Educational Support and Youth Development, Economic Stability and Workforce Development
  • 501(c)(3) Status: Eligible organizations must be registered 501(c)(3) nonprofits in good standing or have a fiscal sponsor with this designation.
  • Non-Discrimination: Organizations must uphold non-discriminatory practices and policies, serving individuals regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, disability, veteran status, or other protected categories.
  • Regional Focus: Eligible organizations must serve the Greater Philadelphia region, including Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia counties, as well as Southern New Jersey counties of Burlington and Camden.

This thorough review process ensures that each grantee reflects the mission of Philly Gives and delivers meaningful impact to the region’s most vulnerable communities.
